J&E Wholesalers was established in May 1945, with its first store located in Prinsloo Street, Pretoria. The store specialized in general merchandise and groceries, and quickly became a trusted name for traders to purchase their wares. Having outgrown this premises, the business moved to Du Toit Street in 1972, also within the Pretoria CBD. J&E became the founding member of the Shield Buying Group, which is now under the Massmart / Walmart group. Shield gave smaller wholesalers and store owners the muscle to be able to compete against the giants of the time and became the blueprint for many other buying groups to follow. J&E also later became the first member of the Unitrade Buying Group (UMS). In 1992, the business relocated to its current premises at 423 WF Nkomo (Church) Street, Pretoria West.
